We received in this cool Roland monochrome monitor, dating from the early 80’s, with a complaint of picture-reduced-to-a-single-horizontal-line. Our tech team diagnosed the problem as a failed UPC semiconductor integrated circuit in the vertical deflection circuit.

The technical background: vertical deflection current moves the picture tube’s electron beam up and down on the picture tube interior/TV screen. The UPC chip, a 10-pin single in-line package, handles vertical sync, vertical oscillation, and waveform shaping on a single chip. Incredibly, even by the 1980’s these chips already included temperature-control circuits to counter temperature changes and ensure stable operation.

We sourced the chip and priced the repair. Customer approved our repair quote, part was ordered and installed; monitor was tested and checked in good working order.

We received in for repair one of the superfine Sony “megadisc” players, as we call them; we’ve done many at Bammel Tech, and this model is one of the latest, last and best that Sony ever produced: the Disc Explorer 400 model. Earlier Sony megadisc players played only CD’s, and could load 100-300 cd’s or more in the transport. The Disc Explorer models play not only standard CD’s, but also SACD, or Super Audio CD format discs, as well as DVD’s. Truly a wonderful product. Customer had door-opening and loading/transport issues. Our tech team diagnosed the unit, with repair to include standard profile services for this product, including belt replacement, plus cleaning of transport and optical pickup element or laser, plus mechanism alignment and adjustments, which can become misaligned over time with repeated play and transport. Customer approved our repair quote, and we completed service and final testing. Total time in shop was approximately 30 days, due to peak summer demand, but this figure should come down as our demand curve normalizes. We are also implementing process improvements intended otherwise expedite repair speed (and quality control.) Another one bites the dust at Bammel Technology Services.
